Plum BBQ Sauce

BBQ sauce is surprisingly easy to throw together and even easier to customize with your favorite flavors. I also love that you can control the sugar if you make it yourself… not everything needs copious amounts of sugar. I will leave that for cake and ice cream.
I had some plums sitting out as well as some tomatoes so I started from there! You could easily play with the ingredients, use a different stone fruit or add coffee, maybe some chili peppers, whatever your favorites are!
Here you go:
3 Cups Chopped plums

1 Cup Chopped tomatoes

1 Medium red onion chopped

4 Garlic cloves crushed

4 Tablespoons of brown sugar (you could used coconut sugar here as well)

4 Tablespoons GOOD balsamic… don’t use the cheap stuff here

4 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 Teaspoon Dried chipotle powder (plus or minus depending on your love of spice)

7 Chopped dates (I had them in the fridge so I figured why not!)

1 15 oz can tomato sauce (that little can of sauce, not marinara)

1 Teaspoon salt
Cook the onion and the garlic in a little oil (whatever kind you like) until they soften on medium low heat. Add the salt and chipotle powder, stir. Then add the plums, tomatoes, brown sugar & dates. Cook for 3-5 minutes on medium low heat. Now add balsamic vinegar, Worcestershire sauce & tomato sauce. Simmer until all the fruit and tomatoes break down, about 30 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes. Using an immersion blender blend in the pot or transfer to a blender and blend until smooth (Careful it splatters!). Use on all your favorite BBQ dishes!

My favorite from last week were those ribs and BBQ chicken stuffed sweet potatoes… The possibilities are endless!
