• January Favorites

Wow, January. You were long. Am I right? No better time than the doldrums of Winter to introduce a fun new post series! Monthly favorites! At the end of each month I will let you know what I have been loving, living in and most excited about that month! Let’s go! Alo High-Waist Lounge Legging – These are THE most comfortable leggings I have ever owned. Seriously. I’d like to say I reserve them for the end of a long day and weekends… but I definitely wear them more often than that! Alo Haze Long Sleeve – Equally as comfortable as the Alo leggings. Turtleneck is perfect for this freezing weather…

  • Primal Palate Rice & Chicken in the Instant Pot

I love Primal Palate Spice blends- gluten free, non GMO, Whole 30 approved, ORGANIC… the list goes on and on. They are such a great company and they really make it easy to pull a flavorful dinner together FAST. I have been playing around with their blends for a while now and have finally perfected Chicken and Rice in the Instant Pot.  The best part of this recipe is that you can use any of their blends and then adjust the vegetables and toppings to suit the flavor profile. A one pot wonder! My favorite is the Super Gyro that is used in this recipe… and wait, also the Adobo.…

  • Cinnamon Coffee Cake- paleo!

A perfect Paleo, kid-friendly cinnamon coffee cake for the weekend. It all comes together in the food processor which makes it super easy. I always opt to use the food processor when I can. It incorporates the ingredients so well! (This is the one I have here!) Ingredients: Coffee Cake 2½ cups blanched almond flour (not almond meal- I like Trader Joe’s brand!)  ½ teaspoon baking soda  ¼ teaspoon sea salt 3 large eggs ½ cup maple syrup ¼ cup melted coconut oil 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon Cinnamon Sugar Swirl  ¼ cup coconut oil, melted  ¼ cup coconut sugar  2 tablespoons ground cinnamon Instructions: Preheat oven to 350.…

  • Smoky Turkey Chili (No beans!)(In the Instant Pot!)

Okay all my Instant Pot fans… this is SO GOOD. And so very perfect for these blustery cold days. It is FRIGID where I live! Who doesn’t crave comfort food in the winter? This is also a perfect recipe for a Super Bowl upcoming shindig- who are you rooting for? Sometimes we are pro bean in this household… sometimes anti. So I love that this is a no bean chili that gets bulked up a bit with addition of zucchini (I promise your kids won’t know it’s there!). When you peel and seed the zucchini it allows it to break down and become for of a thickener to the chili. It’s…

  • The Darien Peach

First let me say, there is no peach anything in this cocktail but I’m naming it after the darling girl that turned me on to this drink. Sometimes you just need a good cocktail. My new thing seems to be making a cocktail on a Saturday night or enjoying one out on the town… wine doesn’t seem to be my jam anymore. I have tweaked it a bit from the original recipe that she shared to suit my taste. Feel free to play around with it too- the original called for spicy tequila and I’m sure that would be fantastic too. The Darien Peach Serves 4 Ingredients: 1/2 cup good resposado…

  • Homemade “Deli” Turkey

I posted yesterday in my Instagram Stories that I was attempting to make my own deli style turkey for sandwiches using none other than my Instant Pot. Yes, yes, I am completely obsessed with that contraption. It is amazing… no ifs ands or buts. (Read my review here.) Anyway, the response to the turkey instastory was exuberant and large! I get it. Sandwiches are such an easy thing to pack for lunches, both school and work and sometimes deli meat is, well, scary. I mean what’s really in it? And if you go for the organic stuff it is so expensive! This is so extremely easy and you can flavor…

  • My Famous Marinade

Famous! No, really. Well amongst my family and dinner guests, at least! Last week was my brother’s birthday. (You may have already seen this on Instagram) I decided I needed to make it a day that we celebrate him instead of getting bogged down in my own grief (and anger) so I made all his favorites for dinner. Grilled lamb chops with my “famous marinade” were ALWAYS his favorite and frequently requested. I make them every Easter. On the side we had his other favorites; roasted potatoes, a big green salad and homemade tzatziki… and let’s not forget the Texas “Sheath” Cake… because it is amazing! It was a wonderful…

  • J. Crew Mega Sale

Everything is thrown in there… there were 18 pages of sale in my size! Coats, sweaters, bathing suits, jewelry… I know you may not want to think about bathing suits in January but I just booked our February trip and ordered #12! I also have been looking for a new coat and couldn’t resist #14 … $115!!!! Without further ado… my J. Crew Sale picks! Women’s Sale 1. / 2. / 3. / 4. / 5. /…

  • 2019

Okay. So here we are. It’s 2019. I ended 2018 broken, so that means I’m starting this new year a little broken too. That’s okay, 2019 will be a work in progress. I wrote last year of my reluctance for New Year’s Resolutions and said what I’d like to see for us in the year ahead instead of “fixing” things. No diets over here my friends. This is still the case. To follow up on last year: 1. I certainly flexed that creative muscle more and have loved the direction I have taken this blog. I can’t wait to see what is on the path ahead for A Modern Housewife. As…

  • What to make for dinner when you are exhausted…

Okay guys, final blog post for 2018! I figured I better make it a good one and what is better than 3 super easy, “barely a recipe” dinners? So here is the thing. I am tired. So very tired. No one really talks about the exhaustion that can come along with grief. I think the exhaustion is because grief is just all consuming, ever present and painful. There is space for nothing else. I have been doing my best to take cut myself some slack, keep expectations low and just focus on keeping my family moving along. I was so incredibly fortunate to have meals delivered by my friends every night for…
