It is the celery juice or the grief?

Okay, so I am edging my way back in to writing posts after a little time off … it is helpful.

My brother, Thad, was incredibly supportive of A Modern Housewife. He loved to see me flexing my creative muscle and doing something that was fulfilling for myself. He also was the best advice giver and had given me some thoughts on different directions to take for content, so stay tuned.

So the title of this post… Despite being exhausted, I psychically feel good. I feel leaner, lighter and stronger than I was a month ago. Is it that I have been drinking celery juice (most mornings) or that I have zero appetite so I am not over eating all the junk? Peanut butter doesn’t even interest me now, let alone wine. Grief really does crazy things.

Let’s talk about celery juice. This is something you may want to file under weird, I won’t blame you.

I read the Medical Medium (Anthony Williams) book Life-Changing Foods and it talks about all the healing properties of fruits and vegetables. I tend to agree, at the end of the day you are what you eat.

After summer (and all the fun food and drink that come with it) I was ready to shake it up a bit. A reset if you will. I was also struggling a little bit with lingering SIBO symptoms and celery juice is supposed to help “reset the gut”.

I have read A LOT of diet and nutrition books because I find them interesting. I recently read The Plant Paradox (which was utterly fascinating) and reread The Whole 30 and toyed with trying out both “programs”. But here’s the thing. Restricted elimination diets aren’t my thing. I’ve done it before (did you read my Ultimate Reset post?) and while I learned a lot and value the experience I don’t want to do it again. I love food WAY TOO MUCH to eliminate food groups unless they are causing me harm (gluten I’m looking at you!). You eliminate foods and then when you try and add them back in after the “program” is over it doesn’t feel very good. I am keenly aware there are times to scale back on dairy, meat, sugar and alcohol and I do. Just not forever and always.

Anyways… I digress. What I like about celery juice is you are adding something IN to your diet not cutting it OUT. According to Anthony Williams celery juice “is one of the most powerful and healing juices we can drink. Just 16 ounces of fresh celery juice every morning on an empty stomach can transform your health and digestion in as little as one week.” Read his full explanation here.

I now try to drink it daily and I really do feel lighter and leaner. Perhaps this is because it curbs cravings, amps up digestion and gives me a little more energy. All of the above would lead to feeling a little trimmer. The Medical Medium also stated that there is a tie between gut health and our nervous system: “By restoring the entire digestive system, celery juice puts our minds and hearts at ease, too.”… perhaps there is really something to that,  maybe it really has “reset my gut”… which after SIBO I desperately needed. My heart and mind could use a little ease too. It makes me feel better on mornings that I drink it, cheers to that!

Everyone asks…. “does it taste terrible?” No. Decidedly not. It is light, fresh and slightly sweet.

So give it a try…

Here is how I make it; no fancy juicer required. (Okay but maybe a fancy blender).

Ingredients:

  • One whole head of celery (organic if you can)
  • Splash of water

Instructions:

  1. Cut the top ends and bulb off of a head of celery. Clean well with cool water.
  2. Rough chop the celery and add to high speed blender (I have this one; it’s amazing).celery in blender
  3. Add a splash of cold water so the blender blades can turn. Blend for about 30 seconds until it is a thick purée.
  4. Place a “nut milk bag” (I have these) over a large bowl to pour the celery purée into it.celery in nutbag
  5. Squeeze out celery juice into large bowl by wringing out the bag. You should have 16oz (The Medical Medium’s magic number!) from one whole head of celery.
  6. Drink!celery juice

16 ounces of celery juice should be consumed on an empty stomach 15-30 minutes BEFORE eating to achieve maximum benefits!

Also, I like to prep my celery the night before (or a few days before and do a batch), it makes it easier during the morning rush. I clean and cut my head of celery and store with the splash of water in a large glass mason jar (or ziplocks, or tupperware!). Makes it so easy!

(The white plastic lids are amazing for a mason jar (no rust!), I have these.)
